How to Stop AirPods Automatically Switching Between iPhone and Mac
AirPods unexpectedly switch audio output between your iPhone and Mac, interrupting your listening experience or calls. This guide helps you manage automatic switching behavior.
Requirements
Have these ready before you begin.
Step 1
Configure iPhone Automatic Switching
Prevent your AirPods from automatically connecting to your iPhone by changing the "Connect to This iPhone" setting to "When Last Connected to This iPhone" in Settings Bluetooth Your AirPods "i" icon.
Step 2
Configure Mac Automatic Switching
On your Mac, navigate to System Settings Bluetooth, click "Options" next to your AirPods, and set "Connect to This Mac" to "When Last Connected to This Mac".
Step 3
Power Cycle All Devices
Perform a full restart of your iPhone and Mac. For your AirPods, place them in their charging case, close the lid, wait 15 seconds, then open it again.
Step 4
Forget and Reconnect AirPods
On both your iPhone and Mac, "Forget This Device" for your AirPods in Bluetooth settings. Then, reset your AirPods by holding the case button for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber then white, and re-pair them with your iPhone first.
Step 5
Ensure Software is Up-to-Date
Verify that your iPhone is running the latest iOS version and your Mac is on the latest macOS version. AirPods firmware updates typically occur automatically when connected to an iOS device.
